Tired of collecting these numbers once a year?

This calculator is made by the team behind Barakat, an expense tracker with an optional Islamic mode. In the app, zakat is calculated from the accounts and goals you already track. It reminds you when your hawl completes and shows the rule it uses. You snap a photo of a receipt and every item is logged. No bank login needed.

Zakat questions, answered briefly

What is the nisab?

Nisab is the minimum wealth on which zakat is due: the value of 85 grams of gold or 595 grams of silver. Metal prices move every day, so the nisab in dollars, dirhams or roubles moves too. The calculator above uses today's price.

Gold or silver nisab?

Both are used. The silver nisab is lower, so more people reach it and more goes to those in need; many scholars recommend it for cash savings. The gold nisab is common when wealth is held mainly in gold.

What is hawl?

Hawl is one lunar year, about 354 days, during which your wealth stays at or above the nisab. Zakat is due when the hawl completes, on what you hold that day. If your savings dropped below the nisab during the year, many scholars restart the count; others look only at the start and end of the year.

What counts as zakatable wealth?

Cash, bank balances, savings, gold and silver, shares and business stock held for sale, and money owed to you that you expect to receive. Your home, car and personal items you use are not included.

Can I deduct debts?

Many scholars allow deducting debts that are due now. On long-term debts such as a mortgage opinions differ, so add only what you must pay soon.

How much is zakat?

2.5% of zakatable wealth after debts due now, when it is above the nisab and the hawl has passed. For example, 10,000 in savings means 250 in zakat.
